Why Copywriting is Dead (And What That Means for You)
In this video, I dive into a bold claim: copywriting is dead. It’s a hot take, and I know some of you will probably disagree, but after experimenting and analyzing the results, I’m convinced that we’re entering an era where traditional copywriting is no longer essential. Here’s why.
Earlier this year, I ran a split test on one of my course websites — specifically the Local SEO Shuriken course (which has since been folded into the SEO Master Bootcamp). The goal was to see just how well ChatGPT could handle the task of writing high-converting copy. So, I pitted my own copywriting against AI-generated copy, with some interesting results.
I provided ChatGPT with a prompt to rewrite my homepage copy using expert copywriting techniques, incorporating Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), which is a well-known strategy for persuading and influencing people through language. ChatGPT churned out a version, which I then edited slightly to make it original content, ensuring it wasn’t flagged as AI-generated.
The results? My copy, after all the tweaking and refinement, was still slightly better, but only by a small margin. It was so close, in fact, that it made me question the need for me to continue splitting my time on copywriting when ChatGPT could do nearly as good of a job.
Here’s the takeaway: AI is getting really good at writing copy. You don’t need to spend years honing the craft of copywriting anymore. With the right prompt, ChatGPT can create copy that hits all the right emotional triggers, addresses customer pain points, and ultimately converts visitors into leads or sales.
In my test, the conversion rate difference was minimal — around a 0.15% difference in favor of my copy, which didn’t justify the amount of time I had spent perfecting my writing skills. In fact, after a few more tests — including for email funnels — the results were even more apparent. ChatGPT wrote my entire email sequence, from opt-in to pitch for my SEO Master Bootcamp course, and it performed almost exactly the same as my own writing.
So, why bother learning copywriting anymore?
The reality is, you don’t have to. Learning to write high-converting copy used to take years of study — books, courses, and endless practice. Now, all you need is a strong AI tool like ChatGPT, and the right prompt to generate copy that performs nearly as well as a human expert. You can even respin the content yourself to make it feel more personal or aligned with your brand.
I’ve also used ChatGPT to write emails, which have seen similar performance in conversion rates. It’s no longer worth spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on copywriting training when AI can deliver a comparable result at a fraction of the time and cost.
However, there’s a distinction to be made here. SEO is not dead. Unlike copywriting, SEO is a multi-faceted skill that requires more than just writing good content. Google, for example, is wary of AI-generated content, and simply slapping AI-written text onto a webpage doesn’t guarantee success in SEO. But with sales page copy, where ranking doesn’t matter as much (beyond your own brand name), AI can easily do the job just as well as a skilled copywriter.
I remember when I started in SEO. It wasn’t just about learning SEO — I had to pick up skills in WordPress, web design, video editing, graphic design, email marketing, and yes, copywriting. But now, for anyone starting out, copywriting is one skill you can skip. All you need is the right prompt for ChatGPT, and you’re good to go.
In conclusion, copywriting is a skill that is no longer essential for beginners. If you’re just starting, you don’t need to learn the intricacies of persuasive writing — you just need the right tools, and AI can handle the rest. ChatGPT has effectively replaced this once-valuable skill, and that’s something I truly believe.
